It may be intuitive or it may be intentional. But the 6 steps they follow are real:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>LEARN-EMPOWER-ASSESS-DECIDE-EVALUATE-REVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fourth step in the leadership developmental process is <strong>DECIDE<\/strong>:\u00a0know <em><strong>how<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>what to measure<\/strong><\/em> to ensure the vision, the goals and the team member\u2019s contributions are on track.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: -0px;\">Goals can be measured in four key areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Quality<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Quantity<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Cost<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Timeliness<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019ve had very similar conversations in both the business and ministry context. It seems to come down to this \u2013 <strong><em>You measure, what matters!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Quantitative data is the easier to come by.\u00a0 For example, the number of bodies on seats each Sunday.\u00a0 Cost and time are concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Qualitative measures are a bit more complicated to track; but can be done.\u00a0 Bottom line, effective leaders track the measures that are the best indicators of, or lack of, progress against the goal. In their book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Disciplines-Execution-Achieving-Wildly-Important-ebook\/dp\/B005FLODJ8\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1538427456&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=4+disciplines+of+execution+book\"><strong>The 4 Disciplines of Execution<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the authors introduce Wildly Important Goals (WIGs). From their experience, the challenge comes not to create the goal; but when the team <em>executes<\/em> the plan to reach the goal!\u00a0To support leaders, the authors break down Wildly Important Goals (WIGS) into Lead and Lag Measures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: -0px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Lead Measures<\/strong>\u00a0are focused on the outcomes you are aiming for in the WIG \u2013 these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\"><u>Predictable<\/u> \u2013 if you accomplish this, then you can expect certain results (\u201cthis\u201d then \u201cthat\u201d).<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\"><u>Influenceable<\/u> \u2013 something you can influence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good Lead Measure might be: Increase the giving by 20% over the next 12 months<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: -0px;\"><strong>Lag Measures<\/strong> are focused on one of the following<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">the goal OR<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">measurement of result.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good Lag Measure might be: Quarterly Review of Giving.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve found it extremely helpful to distinguish between Lead and Lag Measures when coaching leaders.\u00a0The exercise helps clarify what they are aiming at in their WIG and understand the strategic activities a team must execute to reach their goal.\u00a0 Here are five questions for you to use as you coach and empower the leaders around you!<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: -0px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>5 Questions for Your Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">What is your WIG?<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Which are Lead Measures?<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Which are Lag Measures?<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">How will you gather the data?<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">When was the last time you assessed your teams Wildly Important Goals (WIGS)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Deciding\u00a0is an important step in the Leadership Development Process. But Deciding in itself is not enough. In fact, going to a workshop, listening to a podcast or even receiving a degree in leadership does not guarantee a person can lead. I\u2019ve found that many people have knowledge but lack the experience of actually leading a team.
