{"id":360,"date":"2012-10-22T07:15:11","date_gmt":"2012-10-22T07:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.resourcezoneinternational.com\/?p=360"},"modified":"2019-06-23T05:12:13","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T05:12:13","slug":"adaptability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/?p=360","title":{"rendered":"Flexibility &#038; Versatility: Keys to Ministry Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Adatability_1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-361\" title=\"Adatability\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Adatability_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Adatability_1.jpg 460w, https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Adatability_1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are two factors which determine how effective people will be in adjusting their style to meet the needs of others.\u00a0 First, <strong>flexibility<\/strong> refers to the attitudinal factor in our actions.\u00a0 It indicates our degree of <strong>willingness<\/strong>to change our behaviour when appropriate.\u00a0 Secondly, <strong>versatility <\/strong>is a behavioural life skil factor in our actions.\u00a0 It indicates our degree of <strong>ability<\/strong> to change our behaviour when appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>When we discuss \u201cchanging\u201d it is important to remember that flexibility and versatility do NOT mean that we try to become different people.\u00a0 These factors do not suggest that we give up our true identity.\u00a0 They simply mean that to build mutually satisfying relationships, we voluntarily and temporarily adjust our behaviour to meet other people\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p>Most people simply need an accurate understanding of another person\u2019s behavioural style and distinctives.\u00a0 Then if they are <strong>willing <\/strong>to make adjustments in their behaviour, and also have the <strong>ability<\/strong> to do so, a higher degree of mutual understanding and co-operation will ensue.<\/p>\n<p>Others may be able, but are not willing.\u00a0 For some reason, (possibly a lack of respect and\/or trust) they are unwilling to make the necessary commitment to develop relational maturity, and, the relationship moves toward isolation and a feeling of emotional \u201cdistance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Still others may be willing, but are not able.\u00a0 It may be something in their background (emotional immaturity and\/or lack of social skills) that is preventing them from moving to relational maturity.\u00a0 People with lower versatility may be seen as doing things out of their own self-interest, behaving in ways that are only comfortable for them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: -0px;\">Remember, our ultimate goals are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\">Become <strong>aware<\/strong> of the needs of others<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Understand<\/strong> how we can better meet those needs<\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>Change<\/strong> or <strong>modify<\/strong> our natural way of doing things to enhance an environment of mutual understanding and co-operation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2660 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.resourcezone.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Colin-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Colin Noyes.
