Assessing Coaching Competencies

There’s a big difference between hoping you become competent and ensuring that you become competent when it comes to coaching. Through a qualitative research project, we’ve discovered the Core Competencies that effective coaches practise, and we’ve developed a way of assessing these competencies.

The 360-Degree On-line Coach Assessment is used to evaluate a coach on Nine Core Coaching Competencies of a Christian Coach. Based on the perspectives of the coach (or a coach-in-training), a supervisor (or a coach- mentor) and two (or more) people being coached, this research-based evaluation tool will allow the coach to view their strengths and possible areas of growth which will help in developing a regular Personal Development Action Plan.

 Background

Mastery of certain competencies is necessary for one to be regarded as an excellent coach. The nine coaching competencies fall into three categories: Foundational, Relational, and Strategic. Under each competency the coach must demonstrate more detailed and specific microskills.

The assessment determines the overall effectiveness of a coach’s competence. The behavioural dimensions include a numerical rating for each of the nine competencies. This numerical rating is the average of the microskills evaluated.

Guidance to help develop an action plan for coach development can be found in the assessment report. Coaches are encouraged to take future assessments periodically to measure their progress and identify further areas for growth.

Referencing the ‘Developing Coaching Excellence Workbook’ will also help the coach understand the competency and microskills in greater depth by asking key questions that result in improvement.

 Numerical ratings:
  • High rating = 65 and higher
    • Excellent coaches consistently demonstrate their mastery of a competency area.
  • Medium rating = between 35−65 (average = 50)
    • Effective coaches demonstrate competence but lack mastery of certain microskills when compared to high performing coaches.
  • Low rating = 35 and lower
    • Emerging coaches consistently struggle with most of the microskills associated with a particular competency area.

In the 360 Degree On-Line Assessment Report you will find a graph summarising your scores with more detailed numerical ratings.

Validity and Reliability

The 360 Degree Assessment was developed to measure coach improvement, affirm strengths and identify areas for growth. A qualitative research was conducted to identify competencies and microskills for high performing coaches. The questions were then selected by running a reliability test (Cronbach) on pilot data with 225 questions. As a result, this survey is both logically valid and reliable. Continual testing is being conducted with new data to verify how scores correlate with coaches’ performance.
